The Afar Intellectuals Association (AFIA) successfully organized a Regional Workshop on Peace and Security in Semara, Afar Regional State. The event brought together intellectuals, community leaders, university representatives, and development partners to discuss pressing challenges and explore sustainable solutions to peace and stability in the region.
The workshop emphasized the critical role of knowledge, research, and innovation in addressing security concerns that directly impact the livelihoods of Afar communities. Participants highlighted how issues such as resource scarcity, unemployment, and environmental degradation often contribute to conflict and instability. By focusing on inclusive dialogue and evidence-based approaches, AFIA aims to promote lasting peace that benefits all members of society.
Representatives from Samara University, Conciliation Resources, and other partner organizations joined the discussion, offering valuable insights and sharing best practices from across Ethiopia and beyond. The event also provided a platform for young scholars to present research findings, giving voice to the next generation of Afar intellectuals committed to building a safer and more prosperous future.
In his keynote address, AFIA’s leadership underscored the association’s mission to serve as a bridge between communities and donors, working to address illiteracy, malnutrition, unemployment, and lack of peace in the region. The workshop concluded with a call to action for stronger partnerships and joint initiatives that align with AFIA’s vision of an empowered Afar society where knowledge and cultural heritage drive sustainable development.
The outcomes of this workshop will feed into AFIA’s ongoing programs on peacebuilding, education, and community empowerment, ensuring that the association continues to play a vital role in shaping policies and interventions that foster resilience and long-term stability in the Afar region.
