Who we Are
The Afar Intellectuals Association (AFIA) is a nationally registered professional association established in 2020 in Samara, Afar Regional State, Ethiopia. We are a network of young scholars and professionals driven by a shared commitment to empower underprivileged communities and promote inclusive, sustainable development across the region.
AFIA serves as a vital bridge between donor communities and marginalized groups, working collaboratively to address critical challenges such as illiteracy, malnutrition, environmental degradation, lack of peace, and unemployment. Through research, advocacy, and community-centered initiatives, we strive to create lasting impact and build a brighter future
Where We Work
AFIA operates primarily in the Afar Regional State of Ethiopia, while also engaging in initiatives that have regional and national relevance. Our work spans urban centers, rural communities, and pastoralist areas, focusing on addressing key developmental challenges and empowering marginalized populations. We collaborate closely with local communities, government institutions, and development partners to implement programs in education, health, livelihoods, environmental sustainability, peacebuilding, and social inclusion. By combining local knowledge with strategic partnerships, AFIA ensures that our interventions are inclusive, context-specific, and impactful, creating positive change not only in Afar but across Ethiopia and beyond.

At the heart of AFIA is a dynamic and passionate group of young scholars, professionals, and community leaders committed to driving positive change in the Afar Region and beyond. Coming from diverse academic backgrounds—ranging from education, health, and environmental science to economics and social development, our team combines local expertise with academic excellence and innovative thinking. Grounded in a deep understanding of the Afar community, we actively engage with local populations to ensure that our programs are relevant, impactful, and sustainable. United by a shared vision of empowerment and inclusive progress, we work collaboratively to foster development, promote peace, and build resilience across Ethiopia.
