About AFIA
The Afar Intellectuals Association (AFIA) is a nationally registered professional association founded in 2020 in Samara, Afar Regional State, Ethiopia. We are a dedicated group of young scholars united by a shared passion for empowering underprivileged communities and driving inclusive, sustainable development across the region.
AFIA serves as a vital bridge, connecting donor communities with marginalized groups to address critical developmental challenges, including illiteracy, malnutrition, environmental degradation, lack of peace, and unemployment. Through research, dialogue, and community-led initiatives, we strive to promote knowledge, resilience, and lasting peace in the Afar region.
The Assignment
AFIA is seeking a highly qualified and independent researcher to lead a peace mapping study in the Afar–Tigray borderland areas. The research will focus on uncovering the root causes, actors, and dynamics of cross-border conflicts and propose practical entry points for sustainable peacebuilding.

Key Responsibilities
• Design and implement a context-sensitive research methodology.
• Conduct fieldwork, interviews, and focus group discussions.
• Analyze conflict drivers, community dynamics, and key actors.
• Produce a comprehensive research report with actionable recommendations.
• Present findings to AFIA, partners, and community stakeholders.
Required Qualifications
- Master’s or PhD in Peace and Security Studies, Conflict Resolution, Political Science, Sociology, Development Studies, or related fields.
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in peace/conflict research and analysis.
- Strong knowledge of cross-border conflict dynamics, especially in Afar and Tigray.
- Excellent research, analytical, and writing skills in English (knowledge of Afar and Tigrigna is an asset).
- Ability to work independently and deliver high-quality outputs on time.
Deliverables
- Inception report with research design and methodology.
- Draft and final peace mapping report.
- Policy brief with practical recommendations.
